Kerala is reeling under the impact of heavy rains that have disrupted normal life, causing extensive damage to property and leading to several incidents of house collapses and road inundation. The ongoing spell of downpour, which continued unabated on Saturday, has resulted in flood water entering houses, schools, and shops in low-lying areas of Kuttanad in coastal Alappuzha district.

Potholes have surfaced on roads, posing a threat to vehicle users in many places. In Kaikulangara, Kollam district, a family of four narrowly escaped when the tiled roof of their house collapsed due to the heavy showers. Fortunately, they suffered only minor injuries and were promptly taken to a nearby hospital, according to the police. Another house in Kannettumukku was completely damaged during the downpour, with the elderly woman inside managing to escape harm by fleeing to the courtyard upon hearing a noise at night.

The coastal village of Pozhiyur has also been severely affected, with several roads battered and houses damaged due to intense sea incursions. Relief camps have been set up in the area, and fishermen have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea due to the adverse weather conditions.

Water-logging and the uprooting of trees have disrupted normal life across towns and villages in various parts of the southern state. Additionally, several trains heading towards the state capital are reportedly delayed due to the bad weather.

The agricultural sector in Thiruvananthapuram district has incurred significant losses amounting to Rs 1.82 crore over the last three days due to heavy rains. Approximately 66.89 hectares of agricultural produce have been destroyed, affecting 720 farmers during the period from May 22 to May 24.

According to officials, four houses have been completely destroyed, and 41 others have suffered partial damage due to torrential downpour in Thiruvananthapuram district. Several families have been relocated to relief camps in recent days.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in seven districts, namely Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki, Kottayam, and Ernakulam. A yellow alert signifies heavy rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 11 cm. The weather department has forecast isolated heavy rain in these districts in the coming hours.

The Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of high waves ranging from 0.5 to 3.1 meters and sea incursions along the coast of Kerala from southern Vizhinjam to northern Kasaragod until Saturday night. In response to this warning, authorities have advised people to refrain from venturing into the sea and to stay away from beaches. Residents living along the seashore have been urged to move to safer locations if necessary.
