Hemant Soren, the executive president of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), took oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Jharkhand on Thursday. This follows Champai Soren's resignation from the chief minister's post, paving the way for Hemant's ascension.

Governor CP Radhakrishnan invited Hemant Soren to form the government after Champai Soren stepped down. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by the governor in a formal ceremony attended by Soren's father and JMM supremo Shibu Soren, his mother Rupi Soren, wife Kalpana Soren, and senior leaders of the JMM-led alliance.

In his address after the swearing-in, Hemant Soren indirectly criticized the BJP-led central government, stating that the era of their "anti-democratic conspiracy" is coming to an end. He thanked the Governor and expressed optimism with the phrase "Satyamev Jayate."

Earlier this year, Hemant Soren had resigned as Chief Minister before being arrested in a money laundering case related to a land scam. He was released on bail from Birsa Munda Jail on June 28, five months after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Reacting to her husband's reinstatement, Kalpana Soren, also a JMM leader, hailed it as a victory for democracy. She expressed relief that justice was finally prevailing after the tumultuous events since January 31, 2024.

Champai Soren, who had briefly held the chief minister's office since February 2, 2024, resigned on July 3. He cited the return of Hemant Soren and the alliance's decision to reappoint him as the reason for his resignation.
