Shimla: Every day rising inflation has upset people everywhere. The possibility of electricity becoming expensive in Himachal has increased. The State Electricity Board has asked the Electricity Regulatory Commission for an 8.73% increase in electricity rates, citing a revenue deficit of Rs 487 crore, stating the need for annual revenue of Rs 6000 crore for the financial year 2020-21. This time the board has demanded 882 crore more than the previous year. If the commission meets the demands of the board, then lakhs of consumers of the state may get a shock from April.

The Himachal government is currently in debt of more than 50,000 crores. The deficit is increasing as the electricity board's income resources are low and expenditure is high. The board has sent to the Commission a demand to increase the power supply to Himachal's 21 lakh domestic consumers and 30,000 industrial houses at the rate of 8.73%. In the year 2019, the Commission increased the domestic electricity by 5 paise per unit and the electricity given to industries at the rate of 10 paise per unit to meet the annual revenue requirement of 5117.95 crores of the board.

According to the information, the board has incurred a loss of 487.88 crores in 2019-20. The Board has sent a proposal for the annual revenue requirement of 6000.52 crores to the Commission for 2020-21. On the petition of the board, the regulatory commission will clarify the situation in the coming days. In the years 2017-18 and 2018-19, the rates of domestic electricity were not increased. In 2016, domestic electricity was expensive by 3 and a half percent.
