Apart from the big festival days of Diwali, Holi, Dussehra and Indian Independence day, there are public holidays around the weekend when you can grab for an extended break and take some extra time off.
Six holidays are falling on a Saturday or a Sunday. While some will coincide close to the weekend. A notable list of holidays in the calendar year 2025 is here-
Republic day
It is a Sunday on January 26. That means you can have a two to three-day weekend to go for an outing to experience winter before it goes.
Ram Navami

It’s a Saturday on June 7. That means your holiday can begin from Friday and extend till Sunday.
Moharram

Janamashtmi
Lord Krishna’s birth also falls on a weekend. As you end up celebrating Rakshabandhan, another festival waits for you. August 16, Janamashtmi is a Saturday and working people you have the chance to chill.

Pongal and Makar Sankranti (Jan 14)
It is a Tuesday on January 14. The weekend falls on January 11. Even though, Pongal and Makar Sankranti is an optional holiday, yet if you get the chance to, it can be turned into a long weekend from Jan 11-14.
Holi (March 13- 16)
The festivities will begin with the Holika Dahan on Thursday March 13, followed by Holi on Friday March 14. With 15th and 16th being a weekend, it can be an extended holiday break of 4 days.
Eid (March 29-31)
The festival on Eid is on March 31, which is a Monday. That means the celebration and holiday will begin on 29th itself, i.e. a Saturday. For some, it can even be from Friday. A three to four-day outing can be the go to option.
Mahavir Jayanti and Vaisakhi (April 10-14)
Mahavir Jayanti falls on Thursday, April 10. So, if you take a leave on April 11, Friday you can have a break from 10th till 14th which is Vaisakhi.
Good Friday and Easter (April 18 - 20)
The holiday rings in from early Friday, extending till the Easter on Sunday.
Buddha Purnima/ Vesak (May 12)
Buddha Purnima is on May 12, which is a Monday. Your weekend starting from Friday or Saturday can continue till Monday. A four-day outing to a hill station can be planned for.
Independence Day (August 15)
Good news, Independence Day is falling on a weekend. It’s a Friday on August 15, a free and celebratory holiday until the Sunday.
Eid-e-milad and Onam (Sept 5)
It is a Friday on September 5 which is also the festival of Onam and Eid. With the weekend after, the holiday can be an extended one.
Dussehra and Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 1-5)
Mahanavami falls on a Wednesday on October 1. Gandhi Jayanti, the next day which is a Thursday. A leave on Friday can gift you a long holiday for five days.
Diwali week (Oct 18- 23)
The Diwali festivities will begin from Dhanteras on Oct 18, which is a Saturday. The festival of Diwali is on Monday, Oct 20. It is followed by Govardhan Puja on Oct 22 and Bhai Dooj on Oct 23. You can plan your holidays according to the week schedule.
Christmas (Dec 25)
The year-end festival is on Thursday. If you take an off on the next day, then your celebrations can continue for four long days.
