On Friday, Home Minister Amit Shah will hold bilateral talks with his Maldivian counterpart Sheikh Imran Abdullah. During this time, the leaders of both countries will discuss increasing bilateral cooperation in the security field. Abdullah arrived in India on a four-day tour on Thursday. This will be the first time he will meet Home Minister Shah.

On this tour, a government official told here on Thursday that in the bilateral meeting between the two countries, the Indian team will be led by Home Minister Amit Shah and the Maldives team will be led by Sheikh Imran Abdullah. India is one of the countries that first supported the independence of Maldives in 1965. After this, India also established diplomatic relations with the Maldives.

India and Maldives have long linguistic, cultural, religious and commercial relations, which is very strong. However, relations between the two countries also soured between February 2012 and November 2018. The Maldives is just 70 nautical miles (about 129 kilometers) from India's Minicoy (Lakshadweep), while it is 300 nautical miles from India's northern coast. The Maldives strategically holds great importance for India.
