The Ordnance Factories’ Day is commemorated annually on March 18th. It marks the inception of India's oldest Ordnance Factory, located in Cossipore, Kolkata, which commenced operations on March 18th, 1802. The Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) holds a significant position globally, ranking as the 37th largest defense equipment manufacturer worldwide, the 2nd largest in Asia, and the foremost in India.

This special day is celebrated nationwide with exhibitions showcasing various defense equipment such as rifles, guns, artillery, and ammunition. Festivities typically commence with a vibrant parade, accompanied by displays of photographs depicting diverse mountaineering expeditions.

OFB is commonly referred to as the “Fourth Arm of Defence” and is recognized as the “Force Behind the Armed Forces” of India.
It operates under the Department of Defence Production within the Ministry of Defence.

The Indian Ordnance Factories supply a wide array of products to all branches of the Indian Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Its product range encompasses arms and ammunition, weapon spares, chemicals & explosives, parachutes, as well as leather and clothing items, which are exported to over 30 countries worldwide.

Historical Background of the Ordnance Factory Board:

Founded in 1775, the OFB's headquarters is situated in Ayudh Bhawan, Kolkata.
The OFB comprises 41 Ordnance Factories, 9 Training Institutes, 3 Regional Marketing Centres, and 5 Regional Controllerates of Safety, spread across the length and breadth of India.
