In a recent development, the Department of Pensions and Pensioners' Welfare (DoPPW) announced that women government employees and pensioners now have the option to nominate their children to receive family pension instead of their spouse. This change marks a significant departure from the previous practice where the surviving spouse was the primary beneficiary.

Under the amended Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules of 2021, female government employees and pensioners can designate their eligible child or children to receive the family pension in the event of their demise. This move aims to address situations such as marital discord leading to divorce or instances of domestic violence, where relying on the spouse for pension benefits might not be feasible.

According to MoS for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, this amendment aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of empowering women across all sectors by ensuring they have access to their rightful entitlements. Singh emphasized the government's commitment to providing equitable rights to women in the workforce.

To avail of this provision, female government employees or pensioners need to submit a written request to their respective head of office, expressing their preference for their child or children to receive the family pension over their spouse. If the female employee or pensioner passes away during the proceedings, the family pension will be disbursed accordingly.

The new rule also specifies scenarios where the widower of a female employee, if eligible, can receive the family pension. Additionally, provisions are made for cases where the widower is the guardian of a minor or incapacitated child, ensuring continuous support for the dependent.

This initiative comes in response to numerous representations from women officials and pensioners seeking clarity on nominating children before the spouse, particularly in situations involving legal disputes or domestic challenges.

Overall, this move reflects the government's commitment to gender equality and ensures that women have the autonomy to secure financial support for their children, even in challenging circumstances.
