The primary cast of Universal's live-action adaptation of DreamWorks Animation's 'How to Train Your Dragon' has been announced! Universal's live-action version is set to be released on March 14, 2025, with filming beginning this summer.

Hiccup will be played by Mason Thames in 'How to Train Your Dragon'. He previously appeared in Universal's horror hit The Black Phone. Meanwhile, Nico Parker, who previously appeared in HBO's The Last of Us, will play Astrid in 'How to Train Your Dragon'. Dean DeBlois will make his directorial debut with 'How to Train Your Dragon'. This live-action adaptation will be produced by Oscar nominee Marc Paltt and Adam Siegel under Marc Platt Productions.

The hunt for the 'How to Train Your Dragon' cast took several months because the creators wanted actors who could grow into their roles as much as the characters do in the film franchise. The 'How to Train Your Dragon' franchise is unique in that each installment sees a jump in the age of the characters, emphasizing their life events and making it a true 'coming of age' story.

'How to Train Your Dragon' is about an amazing bond between a young Viking boy named Hiccup and an injured dragon named Toothless. Toothless gets loved back to health by Hiccup. Meanwhile, Astrid's character develops as she goes from disdaining dragons to associating with them. These franchises follow Hiccup and Toothless on their struggle to overcome humanity's prejudice against dragons while also overcoming the loss of their first love and parents.
