AGARTALA: Starting July 10, Tripura’s Transport Department has announced a ban on the registration of all three-wheeler passenger and goods vehicles in the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) area of West Tripura District. This measure is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and promoting alternative transportation options within the city.

Officials from the Agartala Municipal Corporation stated that this decision is in line with efforts to improve urban mobility and ensure public safety. The ban, implemented under Section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, applies to various types of three-wheelers, including e-rickshaws, e-carts, e-autos, petrol and diesel autos, CNG autos, and vehicles powered by bio-fuels like methanol and ethanol.

The official notification from the Deputy Secretary of the Government of Tripura explained that the ban is intended to manage traffic congestion and promote alternative transportation methods for the benefit of the public. As of July 10, 2024, no new registrations for the specified three-wheeler vehicles will be permitted within the AMC area of West Tripura District.

To ensure compliance, the Transport Commissioner and District Transport Officer (DTO) of West Tripura have been directed to enforce the ban strictly. The Transport Department will periodically review the impact of this restriction on urban mobility and may amend the notification as necessary.

Currently, there are 23,474 three-wheelers and 4,259 e-rickshaws registered with the transport department in West Tripura, with 70 of these vehicles operating in the capital city, Agartala.
