Kolkata: West Bengal Minister Firhad Hakim revealed on Monday that many individuals from the states of Manipur and Haryana, which have witnessed ethnic and communal clashes, have sought refuge in the bordering districts of Bengal. According to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, the state government is considering resettling these people from both states.

Hakim stated, "Hundreds of lives have been lost, around 63 thousand people have fled Manipur, and mostly are coming to Bengal. People from Haryana are also taking refuge in Bengal." He further added, "We don't have the exact figures, but in the bordering areas, there are Manipuris, particularly in north Bengal. People from Haryana, especially the Bengali community, are coming to Bengal. The government of West Bengal will take a call to resettle them over here."

This statement comes after West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo, Mamata Banerjee, criticized the Haryana government for the recent communal clashes in Nuh district during a Hindu outfit's procession. Mamata Banerjee had previously lambasted the BJP over the ethnic clashes in Manipur, accusing the party of failing to protect women despite their 'Beti Bachao' (Save the Daughter) slogan. As the situation remains critical in both Manipur and Haryana, many displaced individuals are seeking shelter in West Bengal, prompting the state government to consider options for their resettlement.
