I think there is less drama in reality shows these days: Shankar Mahadevan

Shankar Mahadevan is gathering up to be a judge on a singing show again. This time it is for Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs and judging kids can be challenging at times. He says, “I have a different style. There is a lot of pressure on kids, but as a judge, I never discourage them. They come on talent shows to present their skills and for their betterment. As judges, we should encourage them and improve their talent. Also, a reality show is not the end of the world. If one notices a error in a performance, there is a way to express it out. I always try to give positive and encouraging feedback in a way that the child realizes his mistake and does better in the next time, without feeling guilty about it. Also, one should accept the fact that nobody can give a perfect performance if it’s a live show. Small errors are very normal and bound to happen.”

Parents should also play their part and make sure their children don’t face undue compulsion. He says, “Parents should let their kids lead a ordinary life, let them enjoy and not put pressure on them to become stars in a day. Craft is an everyday process and if they want to pursue it, parents should encourage them and guide them. Their childhood games are more important than any competition”.

These days, the growing play on dance and singing reality shows, too, has become a point of chat. However, Shankar feels otherwise. “I think there is less drama than there used to be in the past,” he says, adding, “If the makers of a show put up an AV of a participant’s respectful background, the simple reason is to showcase where the talented one comes from. And if he comes from a not so financially independent family, then the audience should know about it. Despite all the odds in life, they are ready to showcase their talent with relentless honesty. So, it’s just a way to showcase inspirational stories.”
