ICC T20 World Cup: "It's not all doom and gloom," says SA skipper Bavuma

MELBOURNE : South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma thinks "it is not all doom and gloom" for his side coming into the ICC T20 World Cup after losing both the T20I & ODI series to India and then quickly flying to Australia for the showpiece event.

The Proteas have also suffered from a string of injuries, with middle-order batter Rassie van der Dussen and right-arm quick Dwaine Pretorius being ruled out of the tournament, similar to how India has lost pace spearheads Deepak Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah to injuries.

Pretorius was ruled out because of a left thumb fracture he sustained during the latest T20I series against India, and Van der Dussen was ruled out because of an injury to his left index finger that required surgery last month. For the T20 World Cup, tall left-arm fast bowler Marco Jansen has been selected as Pretorius' substitute.

Pretorius' injury two or three weeks prior to the World Cup was disappointing, but Bavuma said that Jansen will make up for the loss with his height and left-arm action.

Yes, Marco (Jansen) is undoubtedly a valuable addition to our team. He certainly enters with a little bit more speed. He also bowls with his left arm, which adds a little more diversity to our bowling attack. He also has a somewhat steep length. I guess we're thrilled to see how much value Marco can offer to the team as he's been chomping at the bit to have his chance, said Bavuma, who himself didn't have a great series in India.

Despite "not having the finest of series" in India, he continued, the team was in excellent spirits.

I believe the boys are in good spirits, to be completely honest. We recently left India, where we clearly didn't have the best of series, but I believe we still have a lot of confidence going into the rest of the season and the performances we've put together as a team.

"So, I mean, I don't believe it's all bad for us. We're eager. We're eager to see how far we can advance in this competition. There won't likely be many expectations placed on our team this time. So I suppose for us, we'll be doing our best to blend in every day, get ready as much as we can for all the games, and also enjoy the ride," added Bavuma.
