New Delhi: The Supreme Court has asked the Central government and an NGO to give suggestions on additional security measures to approve the Chardham project. The government defended the Chardham project and took its stand in the apex court. The Centre told the Supreme Court that ''if the army will not take its missile launcher, heavy machinery to the northern Indo-China border, so how will they protect the country, how to fight the war.''

However, on concerns of landslides in the Himalayan region due to the construction of the Chardham highway project, the government has said, "All necessary steps have been taken to reduce disasters. The Army has to work extensively to reach the Chinese border through hill passes, whether it is landslides or snowfall.'' A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Suryakant and Vikram Nath reserved its verdict on the Defence Ministry's plea to amend its order on a petition filed by 'Citizen for Green Doon' NGO against road widening.

At the same time, the Supreme Court has ordered that steps be taken to reduce landslides in the region. Attorney General KK Venugopal said in the apex court on behalf of the Central government that these are difficult areas, where the army has to send heavy vehicles, machinery, weapons, missiles, tanks, soldiers and food items. He said our BrahMos missile is 42 feet long, it requires large vehicles to carry its launchers. How will the army fight the war if they are not able to take its missile launchers and machinery to the border of northern China?
