Mumbai: Officials said the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and IIT-Madras partnered with MapmyIndia on Friday to improve road safety and driving features on the free navigation app for India.

The three agencies inked an MoU for collaboration on driving and road safety technology for the App, which will be available to all Indians for free, in the presence of Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.

The MapmyIndia app will deliver voice and visual notifications about imminent accident-hazard zones, speed breakers, sharp bends, potholes, accidents, and other hazards, allowing users to navigate carefully and securely avoid collisions. Users and authorities will be able to report and broadcast accidents, dangerous locations or road conditions, and traffic issues via the App, which will benefit other users and improve road conditions in the future following analysis.

MapmyIndia, which won the Government of India's Aatmanirbhar App Innovation Challenge in 2020, also has a number of mapping, navigation, safety, and hyper-local features to assist users in their daily life as they move about their city or throughout the country. While citizens are encouraged to download the free App, all government departments at the federal, state, and local levels are encouraged to report and broadcast information on accidents, bad traffic or poor road conditions, road works, and other potentially dangerous places to alert users.
