India and Maldives signed 4 MoUs focusing development

India and the neighbour Maldives has come up together to sign four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) that includes the Greater Male Connectivity Project (GMCP). The Maldives foreign Affairs Minister Abdulla Shahid about the ceremony stated that India is "undisputed first responder, the best of friends, an invaluable partner". During the ceremony, Maldives foreign Affairs Minister Abdulla Shahid said the shared values and traditions between the two countries built the strong relationship.

The two countries signed MoUs on GMCP, sports and two other agreement including the construction of an Agricultural Research Centre in Hanimaadhoo and another to finance a component of the Drug Detoxification Centre to be built in Hulhudhoo of Addu City are to be implemented under the High Impact Community Development (HICDP) scheme, according to a statement from Maldives foreign ministry. The Agricultural Research Centre, development of the Drug Detoxification Centre at an estimate of Maldives rufiyaa 1,711,434.60 ($111161.41) and 7,980,536.69 ($518353.26) is to be supported by the Indian government.

 The MoU on $100 million grant for the Greater Male Connectivity Project involves the construction of a series of bridges and causeways at a stretch of 6.7 kilometres connecting Male to Vilingili, the industrial zone in Thilafushi, together with the newly proposed International Port at Gulhifalhu. The MoU on Cooperation in Sports and Youth Affairs to increase training opportunities for aspiring athletes and coaches, and to cultivate new skills and gain valuable experience, thus heightening the people-to-people connections between the Maldives and India.
