Because of better Covid management and a major vaccination effort, India effectively handled the Omicron wave, which killed many people in other countries, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Friday. In response to a supplementary question in the Lok Sabha, Mandaviya stated that the ICMR has advised the country and assisted in vaccine-related research on several occasions, resulting in India having its own indigenous vaccine.
"India saw the greatest Covid management and the largest immunisation programme under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership... "While Omicron caused many deaths in other countries, India was able to avoid the outbreak due to immunisation," Mandaviya remarked during Question Hour.
In December 2021-January 2022, India faced the Omicron threat after battling the fatal second wave blamed on the Delta variant in April-May of last year. In India, however, the impact of Omicron appears to be less severe than that of the Delta variant. The total number of vaccine doses given out in the country as part of the statewide COVID-19 vaccination campaign has surpassed 184.31 crore. Bharat Biotech produces the Covid vaccine Covaxin, which is made in India.
