In response to security concerns raised by the United States regarding a criminal network, India has set up a high-level probe committee. The concerns, highlighted during bilateral discussions led by President Joe Biden's administration, prompted India to take immediate action.

Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, confirmed that the Indian government will initiate necessary steps based on the committee's findings.

"During discussions on bilateral security cooperation, the US shared inputs concerning a nexus involving organized criminals, gun traffickers, terrorists, and others," stated Bagchi.

"India takes such inputs seriously as they affect our national security. Relevant departments were already examining the issue," added the spokesperson.

The Enquiry Committee was formed by the Government of India on November 18, as disclosed by the MEA spokesperson.

"On November 18, 2023, India constituted a high-level Enquiry Committee to investigate all pertinent aspects of the matter," affirmed the spokesperson. "The government will act accordingly based on the Committee's findings."

Earlier disclosures from India indicated that the US shared information about a "nexus between organized criminals, gun runners, terrorists, and others" during recent discussions on India-US security cooperation.

This development follows a report by the UK-based Financial Times revealing the US foiled an assassination attempt on Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a prominent Khalistani separatist and leader of the banned Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) outfit, on American soil.

The report also alleged that the US government cautioned India over suspicions of its involvement in the plot to eliminate Pannun.

While the US government did not deny the report, it informed India about concerns related to the alleged assassination plot against Pannun, according to sources cited by the Financial Times.

Comparisons arose between this report and India's reaction to murder allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
