India witnessed a rise in COVID-19 cases, reporting 529 new infections in a single day, as per the latest update from the health ministry. The total active cases in the country currently amount to 4,093.

Within 24 hours, three new deaths attributed to the virus were recorded, with two from Karnataka and one from Gujarat, according to the health ministry's 8 am update.

The surge in cases follows a period when daily infections had decreased to double digits until December 5. However, a resurgence has been observed due to the emergence of a new variant alongside colder weather conditions.

During the peak of the pandemic, daily cases had reached into the lakhs. Since its onset in early 2020, the nation has witnessed over 4.5 crore infections and more than 5.3 lakh deaths over a span of approximately four years.

On a positive note, the number of individuals who have recovered from the virus exceeds 4.4 crore, boasting a national recovery rate of 98.81%, as reported on the health ministry's website. The case fatality rate remains at 1.19%.

As part of the ongoing vaccination drive, India has administered a total of 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines across the nation, as detailed on the ministry's website.
