New Delhi: Sri Lanka is currently facing its worst conditions. The economic situation in the country has worsened. There is a famine of essential commodities including oil, medicine, food grains. Inflation is at its peak across the country. India is constantly taking steps to help the people of Sri Lanka, who are facing the most serious economic and political crisis in their history. Under this, an Indian ship carrying immediate relief materials such as rice, life-saving medicines and milk powder arrived in Sri Lanka on Sunday (May 22, 2022). The consignment has been handed over to the government of the island country.
Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay handed over the consignment to the neighbouring Foreign Minister GL Piris. This included 9000 metric tons of rice, 50 metric tons of milk powder and more than 25 metric tons of medicines and other medical supplies. The new PM of the troubled country Ranil Wickremesinghe has also thanked India for this important help in a tweet. Wickremesinghe tweeted, "Sri Lanka received humanitarian assistance worth two billion (Rs 200 crore) from India today. This includes milk powder, rice and medicines. We are deeply grateful to Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin and the people of India for this cooperation. I also express my gratitude for the help from the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka.''
Earlier, India had sent another consignment of 40,000 metric tonnes of diesel to Sri Lanka on Saturday (May 21, 2022) to mitigate the fuel shortage. The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka had informed about the news through its Twitter handle.
