Skipper Rohit Sharma converted his 50 into a much-needed century to put India in a comfortable position. Todd Murphy rattled India's top batting order on the second Day of the first Test against Australia in Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium here on Friday.
At the time of Tea, India's score goes 226/5 in 80 overs with Rohit Sharma leading Team India from the front with a magnificent century while Ravindra Jadeja (34) was unbeaten at the crease.
India started the second session poorly, with a score of 151/3. On the first ball after the lunch break, Todd Murphy struck the deck hard and gave his team a significant breakthrough by dismissing Virat Kohli for 12. Murphy, making his debut, took his fourth wicket. Suryakumar Yadav, a right-handed hitter making his debut, next came out to bat at the crease. Murphy was the target of Suryakumar's sweep stroke, which sent the ball to the rear square leg area for a four. Rohit Sharma consistently scored goals while clutching one end tightly.
With India at 168/5 in the 60th over of the match, Nathan Lyon then joined the wicket-taking party by bowling a shocker to dismiss debutant Suryakumar for 8 runs. Lyon gave Australia a chance to get back into the match with this wicket. The premier all-rounder for India, Ravindra Jadeja, then came to bat. In difficult conditions, Rohit completed his much-needed century in 171 deliveries with a superb four over the infield. The India captain's 9th century in a Test was this one.
In order to put India in control, Jadeja and Rohit repeatedly smashed singles while hammering Australian bowlers all over the field. In the game's 77th over, the star all-rounder and India's captain put up a crucial 55-run partnership off 107 deliveries. As Rohit and Jadeja led India to a 49 run advantage over the visitors at tea, India's lead began to progressively increase.
