New Delhi: The Indian Air Force is going to remove MiG-21 fighter jets from its fleet. The IAF is scheduled to retire one of the remaining squadrons of its MiG-21 fighters on September 30, an official said. The Srinagar-based squadron, number 51, is also known as 'Sword Arms'. Wing Commander (now Group Captain) Abhinandan Varthaman had killed a Pakistani F-16 during a dogfight at the LoC on February 27, 2019. For this bravery, he was awarded the Vir Chakra, at that time he was in the 51st Squadron.

Abhinandan flew in the same aircraft to respond to Pakistan's air strike. On February 26, 2021, India attacked the terrorist base of terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. After this, the Pakistani Air Force tried to attack India, to which India gave a befitting reply. During this time, Abhinandan Varthaman fell from a MiG-21 in PoK and was arrested by the Pakistani Army.

However, due to india's diplomatic pressure, Pakistan released Abhinandan safely at the Wagah border within two days. Actually, miG-21 aircraft are very old and even after boarding it, Abhinandan  was fiercely praised for shooting down the state-of-the-art fighter jet F-16 and he came out as a national hero.
