New Delhi: Modi Government banned 59 Chinese apps, including the popular Chinese app TikTok, Share It and WeChat citing security and privacy. Amid deadlock with China, there was a demand to ban these apps. These apps have billions of business in India and are heavily downloaded in India.

Other popular Chinese apps facing restrictions include popular apps such as UC Browser, UC News and MI Community. The government has banned such Chinese apps which are mainly of non-financial nature. China's big companies Alibaba, ByteDance, Baidu, Tencent etc. have invested heavily in these apps. They are downloaded in India in large numbers. Therefore, these companies may suffer financially. They can also have an impact on valuations. About 50 percent of India's total app download is from the Chinese app.

30 percent of Tik-Tok users are Indians and about 10 per cent of its revenue comes from India. This app is operated by Chinese company ByteDance. India is the largest market for Tiktok. Tik-Tok has 200 million subscribers. Last year, there were 8.1 crore monthly active users in India who spent 5.5 billion hours on it.
