New Delhi: National Broadcaster Doordarshan has decided to launch an international channel. The government's move comes after several large global media institutions published negative and misleading news about India during the second wave of corona. According to reports, Doordarshan last week released Expression of Interest (EOI) for DD International seeking comments from private companies to draft a Detailed Project Report for the new channel.

Bids were invited from eminent international advisors with experience of advising international broadcasters/media houses on the projects. Prasar Bharati CEO S S Vempati said one such project had been going on for the past few days. "Establishing an international presence for Doordarshan has been a long pending strategic objective," he said. The Prasar Bharati Board in its last meeting (March) had allowed the development of a project roadmap for the same by including a suitable strategy advisor. This EOI is a step in that direction. ’

Under DD International, bureaus will be set up internationally with world service streaming round the clock. Will it be like the Indian version of channels like the BBC or Aljazeera? On this, Vempati said that "now it will be more based on news like BBC World Service", but later it may "develop" as many international interests in India are cultural.
