The Indian Navy’s P-8I aircraft has made its historic debut in Europe, landing at Air Base 125 Istres-Le Tube in France. This marks the first time the P-8I has been deployed to Europe as part of the 22nd edition of Exercise Varuna, a key naval drill with the French Navy.

This milestone comes 63 years after the Indian Navy's Alize aircraft, which was stationed on the former INS Vikrant, last operated from Hyeres Airbase.

Exercise Varuna, scheduled to take place in the Mediterranean Sea from September 2-4, will feature advanced tactical drills designed to enhance cooperation and interoperability between the Indian and French navies. The exercise highlights the growing partnership between the two nations' naval forces.

In a statement shared on social media, an Indian Navy spokesperson remarked, "Celebrating Indo-French Cooperation! Our P-8I aircraft has arrived at Air Base 125 Istres-Le Tube, marking its debut deployment in Europe for the 22nd edition of Exercise Varuna with the French Navy."

The spokesperson continued, "This deployment recalls the last flight of the Indian Naval Alize aircraft from INS Vikrant at Hyeres Airbase 63 years ago. This advanced exercise represents the deepening bond and respect between our navies."

Initiated in 1993 and renamed 'Varuna' in 2001, the bilateral naval exercise between India and France has evolved significantly, reflecting the strong strategic relationship between the two countries. Over the years, it has become a vital platform for exchanging best practices and enhancing naval cooperation.

The exercise fosters operational interaction, promoting mutual collaboration and reinforcing the shared commitment to maritime security, safety, and the freedom of the seas.
