Colombo: India's National Security Advisor (NSA), Ajit Doval, met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena in Colombo, emphasizing the vast potential for expanding economic ties between the two neighboring countries.

During his visit to Sri Lanka, NSA Doval also met with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe to discuss ongoing economic collaborations. Doval arrived in Colombo to participate in the Colombo Security Conclave, scheduled for Friday.

While in Colombo, Doval had separate meetings with his Sri Lankan counterpart, Sagala Ratnayaka. In his discussion with Prime Minister Gunawardena on August 29, Doval expressed India's desire to broaden cooperation with Sri Lanka and sought the Prime Minister's insights on the country's priority needs.

Prime Minister Gunawardena highlighted the energy sector as a key area for collaboration and thanked India for its support in various energy projects. He mentioned that the Sri Lankan government is amending regulations to allow private sector participation in electricity generation and distribution, potentially opening doors for increased Indian investments in solar and wind power initiatives.

NSA Doval suggested that Sri Lanka could generate surplus energy in the long term, which could be sold to India, bringing significant financial benefits. He cited Bhutan's successful export of hydroelectric power to India as an example, noting it as a major revenue source for Bhutan.

Prime Minister Gunawardena also mentioned Sri Lanka's Theravada economic policy, rooted in the economic practices of ancient India during Gautama Buddha's era, which he believes would complement Sri Lanka's economic growth.

He expressed gratitude for India's ongoing support in training Sri Lankan Armed forces and public servants, which has helped enhance their skills and efficiency.

NSA Doval led a high-level Indian delegation that included the High Commissioner, Additional Secretary, and other senior officials. The Sri Lankan side was represented by key officials from the Prime Minister’s Office.

Ajit Doval's visit also included a meeting with his Sri Lankan counterpart, Sagala Ratnayaka, who expressed appreciation for the visit and the shared commitment to regional peace and security.

Doval's meeting with President Wickremesinghe, held at the Presidential Secretariat, focused on strengthening the ongoing economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and India.

The Colombo Security Conclave, which brings together National Security Advisors and Deputy NSAs from India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Mauritius, also includes Bangladesh and Seychelles as observers. The conclave addresses key issues such as maritime security, counter-terrorism, and cyber security, with India playing a central role in the strategic concerns of the Indian Ocean region.
