MANHATTAN: Usha Reddi, a politician from the Indian American Democratic Party, has been sworn in as the state senator for Kansas' District 22.

The longstanding Manhattan Senator Tom Hawk, who last month announced his retirement from the Legislature, was succeeded on Thursday by Reddi, a well-known community leader, as per  KSN TV.

"I took the oath of office as State Senator for District 22 this afternoon. My family joining me today was wonderful, she tweeted. "The evening has been really thrilling. To serve Senate District 22 is an honour for me "Reddi said.

Senator Hawk was thanked by Reddi for his dedicated service, saying that he led with a "sincere love for community" and developed solid bonds along the way. She replied, "I'm sure I'll be reaching out to Senator Tom Hawk a lot. He's an incredible leader.

Since 2013, Reddi has been a member of the Manhattan City Commission and has held the office of mayor twice.
She worked as a teacher in the past at the Manhattan-Ogden Public Schools, where she also held the position of chapter president of the National Education Association for a time.

She graduated from Kansas State University with a master's degree in educational leadership and holds bachelor's degrees in psychology and elementary education.

Senator Hawk's tenure will be finished by Reddi by the time it expires in 2025. The committee assignments for Reddi will be revealed soon.

When Reddi was eight years old, her family emigrated from India to the United States. Notably, she has spent more than 28 years residing in Manhattan.
