Sheopur: PM Narendra Modi on Sunday said that India's wildlife diversity has got a boost with the arrival of 12 cheetahs from South Africa to Madhya Pradesh. These 12 leopards reached Madhya Pradesh on Saturday and were released in different enclosures at Kuno National Park (KNP) in Sheopur district. Five months ago, eight leopards were brought from another African country, Namibia. The number of cheetahs in Kuno National Park has now increased to 20.

Tagging a tweet by Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav regarding the arrival of cheetahs in Madhya Pradesh, Modi wrote on Twitter, "This development has boosted India's wildlife diversity." On Saturday, Yadav tweeted, Welcome, Project Cheetah started under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi has reached another milestone in Kuno National Park today. Twelve cheetahs were released in the enclosures in the presence of Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar.

These cheetahs have been brought under the project to revive the cheetah population in India. As per the action plan of Cheetah Introduction in India, 10-12 cheetahs need to be imported annually from African countries for at least the next 5 years. The Government of India initiated a bilateral dialogue with South Africa in 2021 for cooperation in the field of cheetah conservation. Subsequently, the agreement was signed in January 2023. The last cheetah in India died in 1947 in the Koriya district of Chhattisgarh. It is said that 3 cheetahs were shot in the Shoria Robusta forests of Korea. This species was declared extinct in the country in 1952.
