Melbourne: The International Cricket Council (ICC) may make the four-day Test mandatory from 2023 as part of the World Test Championship. This is being done so that some space can be created in the busy cricket calendar. The ICC Cricket Committee is to formally reduce the test played for 5 days to 4 days for the 2023-2031 season. The report also said that if the 4-day Test was played between 2015-2023, around 335 days in the calendar could be empty.

One day reduction in cricket's biggest format is not new. Earlier in the year, a 4-day Test match was played between England and Ireland. In 2017, South Africa and Zimbabwe also played a 4-day Test match. Cricket Australia Chief Kevin Roberts feels that the 4-day Test should definitely be considered. Roberts told the media, "This is something we've got to seriously consider this week. It's something that can't be driven by emotion but needs to be driven by fact. It needs to be seen that the average length of Test matches in the past. It matters a lot in terms of time and overs."

According to Roberts, he is not seeing this new experiment in scheduled matches. After 2023 it will be fully implemented. What we are committed to doing is working with all ICC members. Nobody is saying that it is easy, but what we are doing is looking at it in a holistic way and we are committed to doing it.
