New Delhi: A lot of us may have drunk lemons, but have you ever wondered if it is a lemonade or fruit juice? If not, now the Supreme Court is going to give a verdict on whether it is lemonade or fruit juice. In fact, the apex court is ready to consider whether the popular soft drink 'lemons' is lemonade or fruit pulp or juice-based drink. After being fixed by the Supreme Court, the exact amount of excise duty to be levied on this product will be determined.
'lemons' was launched by PepsiCo in 2013 and the drink was said to be made from real lemon juice without fizz. This sparked a debate regarding its classification – whether it was called lemonade or fruit juice/juice. Juice based on fruit pulp should be considered. The petition will be heard by a two-judge bench of Justices MR Shah and B V Nagarathna. The Supreme Court made the announcement in the hearing on March 11. The case has been pending since March 2015, and based on the apex court's verdict, there will be a classification of 'lemons'.
According to media reports, the petition has been filed by a company named Aradhana Foods, which wants the drink to be classified as lemonade instead of the current status of a 'fruit pulp or fruit juice based drink'. The apex court is likely to hear the petition in April.
