Jerusalem: Israeli police have strengthened security to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and his family after a letter addressed to them was found to contain a live bullet and a death threat.

The Israeli police and the internal security agency Shin Bet have opened an inquiry into the death threat made against Prime Minister Bennett and his family, according to the police.

According to the brief police statement, a letter intended for Bennett and his family included a bullet, the brief police statement said.   The letter was not sent to Bennett's Ra'anana house, nor to the prime minister's official residence in Jerusalem, according a report released by Israeli publication Ha'aretz online. Instead, it was addressed to Gilat Bennett, the prime minister's wife's old job.

They alerted the family about the letter, which was then forwarded to the Shin Bet, according to the source. The letter also named the couple's 16-year-old son, Yoni, and stated, "We will get to you," as per the report.

The fact that the mail contained a bullet caused the investigating bodies to place a higher priority on the threat than previous internet threats, the report said.

"No matter how heated a political debate becomes, it should never devolve into violence, thuggery, or death threats," Bennett said in a statement posted on his social media.  "As leaders and citizen concerned about their own and their children's futures in this country, we must do all possible to ensure that such events do not occur. We are all individuals",  he added.
