US President Joe Biden has accepted Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's offer to visit Israel in the "coming months," Isreal Prime Minister's office said.
According to a statement released by the office on Sunday, the two leaders discussed Iran's desire to have its Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) removed from the US terror list over the phone.
"I am confident that President Biden, a true friend of Israel who cares about its security," Bennett added in the statement, "will not be able to remove the IRGC off the list of terrorist organisations." "Israel has clarified its view on the issue: the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is the world's largest terrorist organisation," he said. According to a White House statement, they also discussed ongoing efforts between Israeli and Palestinian leaders to reduce tensions and ensure a calm conclusion to the holy month of Ramadan.
The phone conversation took place as world countries and Iran attempt to extend the 2015 nuclear deal, which former US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from in May 2018. The US eventually reimposed sanctions on Iran, causing it to abandon some of its nuclear commitments under the pact.
Israel, which considers Iran to be its arch-enemy, has been lobbying against the deal's renewal, alleging that it will let Iran to seek nuclear weapons free of sanctions, despite Iran's claims that its nuclear programme is peaceful.
