JERUSALEM: Amid rising regional tensions, Israeli President Isaac Herzog called Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to wish him a good Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holy month of Ramadan's end.

On the eve of Eid al-Fitr, Herzog expressed hope for "peace and stability in the region," according to a statement released by Herzog's office, which did not elaborate on the nature of the conversation.

He also called with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, wishing them a happy holiday.

The President is set to meet with other leaders in the coming days, according to Herzog's office. It was the first official meeting between Herzog and Abbas since Israel and the Palestinians began a wave of deadly unrest in March.

In the Abraham Accords, which were signed in September 2020 and negotiated by the United States, the UAE and Bahrain decided to normalise their relations with Israel. The Israeli presidency is primarily a ceremonial role.
