Tel Aviv: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday that if contacted by both the warring parties and the US, he would be open to acting as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine.

In an interview with CNN, Netanyahu said, "I'm not pushing myself in. If asked by all relevant parties, I'll certainly consider it. The "right time and the right circumstances" would have to exist, he continued.

He added that the United States, a close ally of Israel, would also need to inquire because "you can't have too many cooks in the kitchen." In February of last year, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, Netanyahu claimed he was approached to serve as a mediator but declined because he was Israel's opposition leader at the time rather than the prime minister. One prime minister at a time is my rule, he declared.

Netanyahu refused to reveal who asked him to fill the position but claimed it was "unofficial." Ukraine asked Naftali Bennett, Netanyahu's predecessor, to serve as a mediator. Bennett met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in March, but he was unable to mediate a resolution.
