Andhra Pradesh Chief minster  YS Jagan Mohan Reddy  on Saturday elected president for lifetime of Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress (YSRC).

After the party constitution was changed to allow Jagan to be elected as president for life, the procedure was concluded on the last day of the two-day session of the YSRC.  After leaving the Congress in March 2011, Jagan founded the YSRC. Since then, he has continued to lead the party as president, with his mother Vijayamma serving in an honorary capacity.

At the party plenary in 2017, Jagan was last chosen to serve as the YSRC president.

According to reports, Vijayamma left her position as honorary president on Friday owing to family strife. However, she said she left the YSRC in order to support her daughter Sharmila, who is now in charge of the YSR Telangana party in a neighbouring state.

To allow Jagan to lead the party for the rest of his life, the YSRC will now need approval from the Indian Election Commission.

The YSRC is citing several precedents where specific regional parties in other states were successful in getting the ECI's approval to elect a president for life without the need for conducting election every two years.
