VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday evening, at the latter's residence in Vijayawada and discussed a number of important state issues.

The Polavaram project, the Kadapa Steel Plant, the rationale of beneficiary covered under the National Food Security Act, and Telangana Discoms' debts to the state were among the topics discussed.

The CM and the PM also discussed the presidential election, which was on the agenda. The YSRC will play an important role in forthcoming elections, as its votes would support the ruling BJP.

During the discussion, the Chief Minister recommended that the Prime Minister approve the revised cost estimates for Polavaram of Rs 55,548.87 crore, as proposed by the technical advisory committee meeting on February 11, 2019. He estimated that the project will cost Rs 31,118 crore, with Rs 8,590 crore for building and Rs 22,598 crore for rehabilitation.

He also asked the PM to clear the bills as a whole rather than per component and to transfer the R&R package funds to beneficiaries' accounts as soon as possible.

According to Jagan, the NFSA (National Food Security Act) provides insufficient coverage for beneficiaries. While the state government has designated 1.45 crore families for rationing, he claims that just 0.89 crore families receive rations from the federal government. He stated that the state administration is supplying rations to the remaining 0.56 crore families and demanded that the PM direct the officials to correct the state's data.
