New Delhi: The Centre could not pass the Jallianwala Bagh Bill in the Upper House of Parliament. The government used to pass the bill without discussion, but the Congress was not ready for it. It was protesting against the removal of the Congress President from the Memorial Trust through the bill. The bill was postponed until next session to see the situation becoming a confrontational one. The bill has already been passed by the lower house. The government wants to change the Jallianwala Bagh Trust through the bill, including the removal of the Congress President.

With this, it wants to replace the leader of the opposition's largest party in the trust. Presenting the bill in the Upper House, Union Minister Prahlad Singh Patel said, the bill also empowers the government to terminate the tenure of any nominated trustee before the stipulated period of five years without assigning any reason. Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma objected to it and asked why the government wants to remove the Congress President.

It was the Congress which led the country's freedom movement. Nobody should be hesitant to accept it. Nor should there be such an amendment. The Government should show a big heart. On behalf of the government, Ravi Shankar Prasad replied to the Congress and said that the Congress' role in the freedom movement is not diminishing. The country has seen it. This change should be linked to the structure of the trust rather than the link to a party. Considering the importance of the centenary year of Jallianwala Bagh, it should pass. In any government trust, however, no post should be associated with political parties. The bill will now be introduced by the government in the next session.
