The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has not only aided in the expansion of financial inclusion by providing banking services to the most remote parts of the country, but it has also enabled a crime-free environment. States with higher PMJDY account balances have seen a noticeable decrease in crime, according to an SBI Ecowrap report.

In states where more PMJDY accounts are opened, "we also observed a statistically significant and economically meaningful drop in consumption of intoxicants such as alcohol and tobacco products,” according to the report. Crime has risen steadily in India over the years. In 2020, a total of 66 lakh cognizable crimes were registered, with 42.5 lakh IPC crimes and 23.4 Special & Local Laws (SLL) crimes, representing a 30 percent increase over 2018.

From 383.5 in 2018 (385.5 in 2019) to 487.8 in 2020, the crime rate per lakh population has increased marginally. Crimes against women and children increased by 7.3 percent in 2018 and 4.5 percent in 2019, but are expected to decrease by 8.3 percent in 2020. SBI Ecowrap report looked at state-level data accounts level data of PMJDY both aNo of accounts' and 'Balance' and mapped with the state a number of total crimes' from 2016 to 2020 to see the impact of Jan Dhan accounts on crimes.
