In a remarkable achievement, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has officially initiated the lunar journey of its cutting-edge Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) spacecraft. The pivotal trans-lunar injection maneuver has successfully propelled SLIM into a transfer trajectory, bridging the expanse between Earth and the Moon. This momentous step sets the stage for a meticulously planned month-long lunar orbit sojourn, as part of the mission's preparations for a precision-controlled landing.

The awe-inspiring trans-lunar injection was meticulously executed, marked by a pair of meticulously calculated orbital adjustments. The propulsion was orchestrated with exceptional precision, employing both the main thrusters and attitude control thrusters, in order to establish the spacecraft within the critical orbital parameters required for lunar arrival.

The role of the attitude control thrusters is pivotal, as they ensure the spacecraft maintains its orientation during these intricate maneuvers. The execution of burn operations was a high-stakes endeavor, characterized by intermittent radio blackouts that temporarily severed communication between SLIM and ground control. Throughout these suspenseful moments, mission personnel anxiously awaited confirmation that SLIM had dutifully responded to the transmitted commands. Thus far, the mission has unfolded seamlessly, and SLIM is now on its trajectory towards the lunar destination.

Notably, the SLIM spacecraft embarked on this historic journey as the secondary payload alongside the H2AF47 rocket, operated by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Sharing the ride to space with the primary passenger, the X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) observatory, SLIM lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Center on September 7, 2023. The standout objective of SLIM is to execute a precision landing on the lunar surface, an audacious feat aiming for an astonishing accuracy of landing within a mere 100-meter radius. In sharp contrast, previous lunar landers have designated sprawling landing zones spanning square kilometers. It's no wonder that in Japan, SLIM has earned the moniker "Moon Sniper" due to its unparalleled precision.

In terms of its physical profile, SLIM lives up to its name, being an exemplar of compactness and efficiency. The spacecraft's engineering brilliance is evident in its minimalist design, with every component expertly miniaturized. A key strategy in conserving fuel for the crucial landing attempt involves SLIM's economical route to the Moon. The entire spacecraft is ingeniously structured around a primary propellant tank, which serves a dual role as its chassis. An intriguing addition to SLIM's payload is a diminutive, ball-shaped Lunar Exploration Vehicle (LEV) rover, which has now been powered up. JAXA has announced plans to conduct a functional test of the rover, utilizing amateur radio frequencies that enthusiastic space enthusiasts can tune into with their own equipment.
