In 2001's love story comedy Serendipity, it might have been Jennifer Aniston and John Cusack, but the former passed on the main part, which was filled by Kate Beckinsale. As the film approached its 20th anniversary, director Peter Chelsom stated that Aniston would have been the ultimate pick if she hadn't declined the offer because of Friends.

Serendipity director Peter Chelsom spoke with Insider about meeting Jennifer Aniston ahead of the film's shooting and explaining why she didn't end up appearing in it. Revealing their interaction during the time, Chelsom stated that Jennifer considered her Friends role was in the rom-com genre and hence didn't want to take up the film.

As per Insider, Peter stated, "Jennifer Aniston came in to greet us, which I recall vividly. When she first came in, she said, 'I do a romantic comedy once a week,' and she was on Friends at the time, so she obviously had other commitments and chose not to do it."

Given that Sara's character in Serendipity was supposed to be an American, Aniston looked like an obvious option. However, when Beckinsale was chosen, the part was altered to a British one, and the English actress went on to make it a cherished one.

Serendipity was created by notorious Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, and during the premiere of her film last year, Beckinsale came up about her harrowing encounter with Weinstein. Weinstein reacted with anger to Beckinsale after the premiere because she wore a pantsuit to the red carpet event.
