Jharkhand Bandh: Protesting against the planning policy,  Tribal students took to the streets whereby common people are facing a lot of trouble due to the bandh as agitators demand 100% job quota for locals

Today's bandh has been organized by agitators from a number of student organizations in protest of the demand for complete local hiring preference in Jharkhand government positions.

Student agitators won't stop until their demands are met, said student leader Devendra Mahto. All were urged to participate in the bandh by refraining from opening stores and operating transportation.

The 11th board university exams for the Jharkhand Academic Council have been cancelled, and many schools will remain closed today. Emergency services will be available during this period.  According to the report, more than 2500 police officers have been deployed in Ranchi to ensure security.

It is said, the administration pledged an employment strategy based on the 1932 'khatiyan' (land settlement), but instead, it adopted a pre-2016 employment policy, under which 60% of the seats will be allocated for impoverished students and 40% will be open to everybody. Making 1932 the domicile policy's cutoff year will make it easier for the ancestors of those who lived in Jharkhand before that year to find employment.

The government adopted a 60:40 formula in the new employment strategy, which was announced in March 2023. This means that the quota level would increase to 60% while 40% of the positions remained open, but applicants might be required to provide a declaration regarding their place of residence.

Agitators staged a torchlight procession in Ranchi on Tuesday to make their demands known. As part of the students' 72-hour agitation over the matter, the procession was dispersed. Also, they congregated close to Jaipal Singh Stadium before leading a torchlight procession to Albert Ekka Chowk. Prior to that on Monday, the demonstrators tried to get to the home of Hemanta Soren, the chief minister of Gherao, but were prevented by the police before they reached the location. As a result, they took detours and gathered around Sidhu-Kanhu Park, which is adjacent to the CM's residence.
