Srinagar: The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), an alliance of separatist parties in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, has elected Masrat Alam as the new Congress president. Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani passed away on Wednesday last week after which the decision was taken. APHC announced at a meeting in Srinagar that Shabbir Ahmed Shah and Ghulam Ahmed Gulzar will be vice presidents of the Hurriyat Conference. While Maulvi Bashir Ahmed Irfani will continue to work as secretary-general in APHC.

The new appointments come after Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani's intake at his Haiderpora residence on Wednesday last week. Masrat Alam Bhat (50), the newly elected president of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, is currently lodged in Tihar jail.  Meanwhile, some people raised anti-national slogans while handing over separatist leader Geelani in the past. However, The Budgam police have registered a case against some of Geelani's relatives in this regard.

On the other hand, after the death of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, there were some allegations against the Jammu and Kashmir Police, which were also cleaned up on their behalf. Geelani's sons alleged that his father was forcibly cremated by the police, on which police released photographs of the last visit and burial.
