Lucknow: A judge from the Allahabad High Court's Lucknow bench handed Rs 15,000 to a poor Dalit student who was unable to pay the fees for allotment of a seat at IIT (BHU) after passing the joint entrance test (JEE) advanced.
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority and IIT (BHU) were ordered by Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh to admit the student to the mathematics and computing (five-year, bachelor and master of technology, dual degree) course. If no seat is available, the bench additionally directed the IIT BHU to construct a supernumerary seat for the Dalit student. The bench ordered the student to report to BHU with all required documentation for admission within three days.
On Monday, the bench issued the aforementioned order in response to a plea filed by Sanskriti Ranjan, a student. She had asked the court to order the Joint Seat Allocation Authority and IIT (BHU) to provide her more time to pay the Rs 15,000 fees. She claimed in the petition that she was a member of the Scheduled Caste. She got a 95.6 percent high school average and a 94 percent intermediate average.
