PM Modi Pays Tribute to Former PM Rajiv Gandhi on 33rd Death Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tribute to the late former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the occasion of his 33rd death anniversary today. Modi took to social media to express his respects, posting, "On his death anniversary, my tributes to our former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji."

In a solemn ceremony at Veer Bhumi in Delhi this morning, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and party MP Rahul Gandhi also paid homage to Rajiv Gandhi. Other senior Congress leaders such as P Chidambaram and Sachin Pilot joined in to honor the former prime minister.

Rajiv Gandhi's tenure as the Prime Minister of India began in October 1984, when he took over the leadership of the Congress party after the assassination of his mother, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He became India's youngest Prime Minister at the age of 40. He served in office until December 2, 1989.

Born on August 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi met a tragic end on May 21, 1991, when he was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. His untimely death shocked the nation and left an indelible mark on Indian politics.

Today's tributes underscore the enduring legacy of Rajiv Gandhi's contributions to India's development and his lasting impact on the political landscape of the country.
