Washington: During her discussions with the leaders of Poland and Romania beginning Thursday, US Vice President Kamala Harris will collaborate on next steps to respond to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and reassure them of Washington's support. The countries, which are NATO's easternmost members, have grown increasingly concerned about Russian encroachment in the region. They share a border with Ukraine, which is seeing tens of thousands of refugees pour in.
According to senior administration sources, Harris will focus on how NATO countries can enforce the economic measures that have been imposed, as well as how they can stay aligned and move forward together. She will also meet with Ukrainian refugees in Poland to discuss how to continue providing humanitarian and security aid to Ukraine and the region, according to the statement. The invasion has resulted in the displacement of almost 2 million people.
They said the vice president will meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is also visiting the region, in Warsaw to discuss the issues. One of the officials stated, "A lot of our discussions in these two capitals will be about setting next steps... and how we take the ball ahead."
One of the administration sources said Harris will use the trip to convey the message that "Putin has made a mistake that will result in a resounding strategic loss for Russia." The Kremlin characterised its efforts as a "special operation" aimed at disarming Ukraine and deposing neo-Nazi leaders.
