In a recent development, the Karnataka Real Estate Regulatory Authority (K-RERA) has named retired IAS officer Rakesh Singh as its new chairperson, effective immediately. This appointment comes after a court's interim ruling that barred Naveen Raj Singh, the principal secretary of the housing department, from acting as the interim chairperson of K-RERA.

Rakesh Singh brings a wealth of experience to the role. His career includes leading the water resources department, managing the Bengaluru Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), and serving as the additional chief secretary of the urban development department (UDD).

On Tuesday, Justice R. Nataraj of the high court, who is overseeing a case regarding the legitimacy of Naveen Raj Singh’s interim role, indicated that it was not appropriate for Singh to continue in this capacity. Justice Nataraj noted that the Karnataka Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Rules, 2017, do not permit a third party or a state government officer to act as the chairperson during a vacancy. The court's order clarified that the most senior member of K-RERA should serve as acting chairperson until a new appointment is made according to the regulations.
