Haveri: For the impending state elections, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai submitted his nomination on Saturday, April 15, from the Shiggaon Assembly constituency. Bommai paid a special pooja at Hubli's Shri Siddharoodha Math before submitting her nomination papers.
Voting for the 224-member Assembly will take place on May 10, and results will be tallied on May 13. On April 11 and April 12, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) revealed the names of 189 candidates on the first list and 23 candidates on the second list. Eight ladies and 52 newcomers made up the first list.
Seven sitting MLAs in all were excluded from the second list. The list indicates that Nagaraja Chabbi, who recently switched from the Congress to the BJP, has been handed the nomination to run in the Kalghatgi constituency. The daughter of former MLA Y Sampangi, Ashwini Sampangi, will run from Kolar Gold Fields (KGF).
The second list did not include NR Santosh, a close relative of former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa. GV Basavaraju received a ticket to run for office in the Arsikere district.
The party has handed Deepak Doddaiah the ticket to represent the Mudigere constituency. Kumar Swamy, the current Mudigere MLA, was unable to be included on the list.
Gururaj Gantihole of the Byndoor constituency has been handed the BJP's nomination. Sukumar Shetty, a sitting MLA who did not receive the ticket, is replaced by him.
As per updated list, Shivakumar received a ticket from Madal Virupakshappa's seat in Channagiri. It should be noticed that no members of Madal Virupakshappa's family were listed.
The BJP is yet to announce the names of the candidates for the 12 constituencies, which include Hubli Dharwad Central, Krishnaraja, Shivamogga, Mahadevpura, etc. Several Karnataka BJP leaders, meanwhile, voiced their discontent after the party announced the names of the candidates.
Before the elections in Karnataka, former deputy chief minister Laxman Savadi switched parties to the Congress party because the BJP refused to provide him a ticket.
At Siddaramaiah's mansion in Bengaluru, Savadi met the leader of the opposition in the assembly and the state president of the Congress, Shivakumar.
On April 12, Savadi announced his resignation from the BJP's primary membership and the Legislative Council after failing to secure a ticket to run for re-election in his Assembly district of Athani.
On the other hand, after being rejected for a ticket for the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections, Anil Benake's supporters, a sitting BJP MLA from Belagavi North, organised a demonstration on Tuesday evening.
Further, BJP MLA Mahadevappa Yadawad's supporters demonstrated against the denial of his ticket in Belagavi's Ramdurg constituency. Chikka Revana, who recently joined the BJP, received the constituency's vote.
