Bangalore: Hundreds of Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists have gathered outside the Jamia Masjid in Mandya, Karnataka. They have claimed that Jamia Masjid is a temple and have been demanding that Hanuman Chalisa be recited outside the mosque. Police also reached the spot after receiving information that VHP and Bajrang Dal workers had gathered. At the moment, the police are trying to convince VHP and Bajrang Dal workers.

Barricades have been erected outside the Jamia Masjid in Srirangapatna Taluk of Mandya. Five platoons of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) and other security forces have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. The district administration has been put on alert after Karnataka Home Minister Araga Gyanendra issued instructions to take precautions. Section 144 is currently in force in the city. On May 20, the VHP and Bajrang Dal had submitted a memorandum to the Mandya district commissioner demanding that a survey be conducted to find out the truth on the lines of Gyanvapi mosque in Jamia Masjid.

Hindu organisations claim that in place of this mosque, there was a Hanuman temple, which was demolished and the mosque was built there. Hindu organisations had announced a protest march named Srirangapatna Chalo from Kuvempu Circle in Mandya to the disputed mosque. For this, they had sought permission from the authorities, but permission was not given. Even after this, Hindu organisations are taking out protest marches.
