Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has presented Karti Chidambaram at Patiala House Court on Wednesday evening. He was arrested from Chennai Airport earlier in the morning on his return from London. Karti Chidambaram is the son of former finance minister P Chidambaram. He is being represented by senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

CBI demanded fifteen day custody of Karti Chidambaram to investigate the scam thoroughly claiming the latter was not co-operating with the investigation.

“Karti Chidambaram is evasive in his replies and investigation. He made incorrect statements with respect to evidence. All this delays the conclusion of investigation,” said CBI in the court pleading for his custody.

In defence of junior Chidambaram, Singhvi stated that his clientele has not left the country following the allegations on him like ‘others’ referring to fraudsters Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya, who fleed the country after multicrore fraud. Singhvi also stated that CBI has not issued any summon after the last one issued in August 2017 and is now alleging that he (Karti Chidambaram) is not co-operating with the investigation.

Karti Chidambaram is accused of money laundering by CBI and Enforcement Directorate. The FIR was registered against him by CBI in May 2017 after detecting irregularities in the clearance given to INX Media by Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).  INX Media received Rs. 305 crores as overseas funds when his father was the finance minister in the ruling UPA government.
