Sonamarg - Jammu & Kashmir: On Monday, January 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the Z-Morh tunnel, a 6.5 kilo-meter-long engineering marvel located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu & Kashmir. This state-of-the-art tunnel is expected to enrich the connectivity and bolster infrastructure in the region. This state-of-the-art tunnel now ensures year-round access to the popular Sonamarg tourist destination, a significant boost to the region’s connectivity and tourism potential.

Honoring Sacrifices and Acknowledging Efforts

Addressing a gathering after the inauguration, PM Modi paid tribute to the seven individuals who lost their lives in a terrorist attack near the Z-Morh tunnel in October last year. "I want to say my grateful to all the workers who took on this challenging task, risking their lives for the progress of Jammu & Kashmir and the nation. Let us also remember the seven brave colleagues who made the ultimate sacrifice," he said.

The Prime Minister lauded the resilience and hard work of the laborers who completed the tunnel despite difficult conditions. He highlighted the transformation taking place in Kashmir, noting that the region is regaining its identity as the ‘Dharti Ka Swarg’ (Heaven on Earth).

A Vibrant Kashmir: New Beginnings

PM Modi expressed optimism about the vibrant atmosphere in Kashmir, sharing his delight in the region's cultural resurgence. “Kashmir is flourishing again. People now visit Lal Chowk in the evenings for ice cream, and the Polo View Market has become a hub of art and creativity. Musicians, artists, and singers perform regularly, bringing life back to the Valley,” he added.

Festive Spirit Across India

Acknowledging the celebratory mood in the country, the Prime Minister highlighted several festivals being observed on the same day. “Today is special for many reasons. Millions are gathering in Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela, while Punjab and North India celebrate Lohri. Elsewhere, people are marking Makar Sankranti and Pongal. My warm wishes to everyone enjoying these festivities,” he said.

Nostalgic Reflections on Kashmir

PM Modi also reminisced about his earlier days working in Jammu and Kashmir as a BJP worker. He mentioned former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent social media post showcasing images of the region. "Viewing those images only amplified my enthusiasm to visit this place," the Prime Minister remarked, expressing his excitement and appreciation for the scenic beauty and strategic importance of the location. My bond with Kashmir goes back decades, and being here always reminds me of my time working closely with the people of this beautiful region,” he shared.

The Z-Morh tunnel is a key step in enhancing Jammu and Kashmir’s infrastructure, connecting people, and fostering economic growth while preserving the region’s cultural and natural heritage.
