Rajasthan player dies of heart attack in the ongoing Wushu Championship at Chandigarh university

A Wushu player from Jaipur, Rajasthan died during the All India Inter-University Wushu Championship conducted by a national body at Chandigarh University in Gharuan. The player, identified as Mohit Sharma suffered from cardiac arrest, breathing his last in the evening. He was the district champion from his state, but tragically died in between the match.

 

 
 
 
 
 

 

The sources and onlookers present during the event said that the player collapsed on the mat during a bout which he was leading in the first round, the exact cause of the death is still not known until the final reports come. They informed that the player was declared injured and knocked out. He struggled to return to the mat, the referee had to seek help to lift the player. After which, Mohit was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Kharar where he was declared dead.

The authorities of the University claim that they have no role in organizing the Championship. The organizers of the tournament also refused to comment on the incident. The CEO of Wushu Association of India isn’t available either for any statement from the side of the authorities.

Kamal Taneja, SHO, Gharuan said, “A young boy has died during a tournament in the university. The body has been kept in the mortuary of the Civil hospital, Kharar. The family members of the deceased have been informed about the incident. A post mortem examination will be conducted.”

The death of the young player raises questions on the medical surveillance and facilities provided to the sportsmen during such events in the country. And especially if it is organized by a national body, it becomes even more concerning. Further investigation and medical reports will reveal the details.
